How to rock a pencil skirt: a style intereview with Alice
Alice loves to wear pencil skirts. Especially with blazers. This combination is part of her signature way then no wonder then that she absolutely nails this look. Let's detect out more than about Alice'due south unique style and why she likes to wear pencil skirts so much.
Hello Alice. Cheers for taking the time out to answer a few questions for 40PlusStyle.com. Can you lot tell us a petty bit more about yourself?
I am a total time working mother with a 5 yr old little guy and have been happily married for 7 years. I work in the banking manufacture where suits and night colors are the norm. (Then I tend to stick out with my brilliant outfits and design mixing outfits.) I laugh as I type this but my part time job is being a chauffeur to my son for his very active social life. When I am non working or chauffeuring, I beloved to read, practice and of class shop.
As a indicate of reference which age grouping practice you belong to or perhaps you are willing to share your historic period?
I am 41.
Tin can you tell the states a bit more about your web log Happiness at Midlife and why you created it?
Before blogging, I had a closet total of clothes and kept using the aforementioned items over and over once more. I started taking pictures of my outfits to encourage myself to apply my clothes in a new way and use what's in my closet. I loaded these pictures on Pinterest and from in that location I discovered fashion blogs. I started reading a few and didn't have any connections to whatsoever of them. I figured that by starting a web log, I volition find people of similar interest in wearing apparel and hopefully connect with them as well.
How would you describe your own manner?
I've always had an erstwhile soul and with my career in a conservative industry, I would describe my style as feminine with a twist. I honey dress that heighten a woman's figure with a defined waist or extra details like ruffles and lace on a top.
What would you lot consider the most important components of your style?
I really attempt to focus on a flattering fit and wear what makes me comfortable. I love dress that take actress details that may only be seen by me. For case, I love jackets that are lined in pretty prints or bra strap snaps on your tops to proceed your straps in place.
Where practice you live and how does that influence your style?
I live in southern California where information technology'south very laid back. With a immature child and a married man who wears shorts on the weekends, I tend to go on my weekend outfits very laid back also. I would say my lifestyle has a bigger influences on my style than where I alive.
Practise yous experience you take a signature style?
If you asked me this before starting my weblog, I would say no. But looking through my pictures, I would say information technology'south a skilful pencil skirt with a blazer. I am so drawn to the shape of a pencil skirt and how feminine they brand me feel and I honey that they are flattering on most trunk types. I also never realized how many cuts and styles of blazers at that place are. I exercise attempt to focus on blazers that are a little more unique with details (like a picayune peplum or some ruffles).
What inspires your outfit choices the most?
I call back that would be my lifestyle again. I always focus on function and comfort first. If I am having a meeting with people I don't know, I will dress more than in my traditional broker suit (dark colors) and maybe accept some fun with my shoes.
I do snap pictures of outfits that grab my eye (from mag to store displays) and keep them in a folder on my telephone and see how I can create the outfit with items in my cupboard.
Do you have things similar color profiling or body type into account when y'all dress?
The quick answer is probably no but I may do this on a hidden level. I've learned that when I wearable a color that is not flattering to my peel tone, information technology helps when I wear that color on the lower half of my body. So information technology works.
In regards to dressing for my body type, I call up it changes with fashion trends. I am 5'4" and I take very athletic legs. In the past, wearing cuffed jeans with flats would be discouraged since it will just shorten me even more than. I read somewhere to avoid talocrural joint strap shoes as well to reduce the size of my calves. I volition say that wearing cuffed jeans with flats is pretty acceptable even for a shortie similar me and it's something I vesture a lot on the weekends. I besides own a scattering of ankle strap shoes and love them.
Has your style changed at all after turning 40?
In my early on 30s I wore matching suits to work everyday. At present that I am more comfortable in my own peel, I practice take more risks with colors as well every bit pattern mixing.
Do you believe in dressing 'age accordingly' and what does it mean to yous?
I believe in dressing what makes y'all comfortable. As I mentioned before, I have always had an old soul and was never comfortable wearing anything that showed also much skin. I never dressed this way in my younger days and volition not outset now. I shop at mass retailers where younger women shop and whatever I buy, I brand it my own.
Conviction is key. Yous can vesture annihilation if y'all vesture it with confidence and a smile.
Would y'all say that at this stage of your life you are now more than, or less interested in manner, way and the way you expect?
I have always been interested in manner. It's not a priority for me to be in the latest style. Rather I just want to look similar I made an effort to wearing apparel before leaving the house. I have never been comfortable wearing yoga pants and workout gear all twenty-four hours long. You tin wearable a plain white tee and jeans and add together a scarf and yous will await 10x more put together.
Why is the way you look of import to you?
Y'all only have one fourth dimension to make a first impression. Y'all never know who you will come across or crash-land into.
Which of the outfits on your blog are personal favorites and why?
Hither are few of my recent favorites:
I love the fit of these pants and the subtle pattern mixing with the floral heels in this outfit. It'southward professional and a bit of fun at the aforementioned fourth dimension.
I like this outfit because of fun pattern mixing and the use of tube skirt (which is trendy now) but still works for my body type without feeling too cocky conscious with the addition of a blazer and tights.
Black and white is e'er a go to color for me and with the pop of pink – it added a fun factor to this piece of work outfit. I had purchased these pants and featured them on the blog and asked readers if I should hem them and the answer was an overwhelming Yes! I beloved the feedback and suggestions I get from everyone.
This is an outfit I would never have tried had I non been reading manner blogs. I apply my blazers typically for piece of work and rarely for the weekends. I dear the mix of dress up and coincidental clothing of this outfit.
Do yous follow trends? And if yeah, which trends excite you lot at the moment?
Aye and no. I tend to wait and see on some trends. When peplum came out, I was really on the argue about information technology. I've learned how well they define your waist and at present tin't stop wearing them even if they are not on trend. One tendency that I am excited to see is printed sneakers. I recently bought a pair of leopard sail sneakers and love them considering they fit into my lifestyle so well. If you lot use a plainly white tee and jeans and add a pair of pair of these fun sneakers – you only elevated your outfit just a fleck more.
Practise yous accept any mode and mode tips for women over 40?
Have fun with your apparel and take some take a chance… after all it'due south just clothes. I take come to realize that well-nigh people don't really intendance if your colors match or you are in style, then simply article of clothing what makes y'all happy.
What are your plans for your weblog and how do yous encounter it develop over the coming years?
I don't really accept much plans for my blog since it is just a fun way for me to connect with some great people out there. I accept recently started a serial about fettle on Saturdays. I accept struggled with losing a few pounds and wanted to share my journey and hope to inspire others and keep myself motivated. Part of me feels a bit lightheaded writing about dress which is a chip shallow and I hope to feature some individuals that have had success in improving their health and hope that I can help spread the word about beingness healthier.
